GROUNDIES® truly climate-neutral: This is how it works!
Sustainable, fair, environmentally friendly – With shoes, it is not just about the design, material or price, but also about inner values. That is what makes a difference, at least that is how we see it. Not because target group surveys force us to do so, or because we expect more sales, or because we are from Freiburg. We just have that mindset. GROUNDIES® - only works with conviction.
We produce barefoot shoes and inevitably had to deal with the question: How big can our ecological footprint be? As well known, the size depends strongly on the energy demand and this in turn must be measured significantly by the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted. And we do not want to compromise on it- as well as with our shoes: We want to leave a footprint, no matter how small. On the ground, in the air, in water - everywhere just the bare minimum. That is why we are CO2 neutral!
Climate neutral, is that even possible?
We create our GROUNDIES® shoes with a lot of hard work, dedication, and love. The different raw materials, the transport across national borders, the complex processing, the people in the company - they all need very different forms of energy. That's why we started by identifying the potential we can exploit with our own resources and the collective conviction of our team. Four examples among many: At our Freiburg site, we obtain green electricity from hydroelectric and wind power, we optimize business routes and production chains by merging sites, we rely on e-bikes for our employees and emission-free work routes, we produce only as much shoe as necessary and create durable quality - we offer a three-year guarantee on our soles.
Investing in our future today
We continue with our optimizations. We have found a strong partner to tackle the goal of CO2 neutrality together with us: ClimatePartner. After intensive analyses, we know exactly how many kilograms of CO2 we need to compensate in order to get zero. Since we sell our products worldwide, we have deliberately chosen a climate protection project that, although not at our doorstep, is very close to our hearts: With the help of ClimatePartner, we are protecting the old-growth rainforest in Peru from deforestation.
Our supported project: Forest protection in Madre de Dios, Peru
Madre de Dios is an Amazon region with particularly high biological diversity. It is also home to several indigenous peoples. The valuable habitat of these people as well as endangered animal species is immensely threatened by massive forest clearing, due to road construction projects.
This project helps to preserve and sustainably manage a 100,000 hectare forest area. This will save 660,000 tons of CO2 per year. In addition, we offer fair jobs and numerous educational opportunities. Our commitment affects the environment and people at the same time.
